Learning to Read & Reading Schemes

Children in our Early Years will take home a picture book to share at home when they begin in our Reception Class.  They are encouraged to 'tell the story' in their own words to begin to develop language and storytelling skills.  Parents and carers can help by encouraging them to answer questions about what they can see and to guess what might happen next!

 Our children will then begin to read words using 'Look and Say' strategies - the use of flashcards having high importance.

These flashcards consist of 'high frequency words' and are given to the children to learn in a particular order to fit in with our Phonics Scheme.  

As the children begin to learn their initial sounds and begin to blend these sounds to read words, they will be given a Twinkl Phonics scheme book to support the development of their phonic skills to read as well as their sight vocabulary.  Children are encouraged to complete the pre and post reading task at home with theie parents/carers. 

Children at Stanton really enjoy reading and our curriculum offers a variety of ways to explore and enjoy reading and develop reading skills.  Our children take part in Whole Class shared reading sessions, Guided and Group reading, Paired Reading, 1 - 1 and Independent reading and Reading for Pleasure opportunities.  We encourage our children to read at home and discuss books with an adult 5 times a week and the children respond well to our reading reward incenticves.
